Grupo Mayan Resorts:Cutlery and Glassware

The fine dining experts at Grupo Mayan realize that for many people looking at the amount of cutlery and different glassware at a dinner table for a gourmet dinner can be quite frustrating. There is a simple method to the madness though and Grupo Mayan experts want you to follow these tips in order to avoid any embarrassing circumstances that may arise. These tips from the Grupo Mayan experts will allow you to understand proper table settings.

CUTLERY
Grupo Mayan dining representatives know that there is a golden rule whenever it comes to cutlery (eating utensils), always use the cutlery on the outside first and work your way inward. Use the outside fork and knife first as these are meant to use for your soup, salad, and or appetizer. After you have used these utensils, use the inside fork and knife for your entrée and the fork above your plate for your dessert. Make sure that you place the knives on the right side and forks on the left. Any spoons that need to be used will be placed farthest to the right.

GLASSWARE
There are usually more than one wine that is served at a gourmet dinner party. The glasses should be placed above the knives and with the water glass on the extreme left. Place each glass in the order that it will be used from left to right. For example would be Water- Red Wine- Dessert Wine

PLATES & NAPKIN
Grupo Mayan wait staff place the base plate also known as the place plate in the very center of the setting of cutlery. Often times your plate will have a napkin folded on top of it. If the first course or the entrée is already placed upon this plate then you will find your napkin to the left of the forks. Your setting should also include a side or what is called a butter plate. This will be positioned to the left of the forks as well with a side knife usually a butter knife. If you are having limited space at your table, it can be acceptable to place the napkin across that plate as well.

MISCELLANEOUS
Grupo Mayan etiquette experts feel that whenever you are seated you should take your napkin, unfold it, and lie it across your lap. Whenever you are eating your bread or rolls, you should always break and eat the bread with your fingers instead of cutting it. Grupo Mayan dining experts agree that there are times when it is appropriate for fingers bowls to be served. These are small bowls that you dip your fingers in and dry them off on your napkin. Whenever you are finished eating, place your knife and fork side by side in the center of the plate
